Economist Op-ed: Reuel Proposes International Agency
Philip Fox, 18 April 2023
A powerful international organization is needed to effectively control AI risks – an organization in which tech companies, research institutes, NGOs and civil society are represented alongside national governments. This is what KIRA founding member Anka Reuel (Stanford) and leading AI expert Prof. em. Gary Marcus (NYU) advocate in a recent opinion piece for the Economist.
They suggest to establish an International Agency for Artificial Intelligence (IAAI), which is non-profit, politically neutral and addresses AI risks worldwide. It should focus on both technical and governance solutions and thus combine scientific and regulatory approaches.
Anka Reuel comments: "The risks posed to humanity by advanced AI have global dimensions. It is therefore not enough for individual countries to address this problem independently of each other. We need a joint, globally coordinated effort to limit the negative effects of AI and prevent a potential AI arms race. And we should act quickly – the next few years and decades will be crucial for a safe and fair transition to a world with advanced AI."
