KIRA Launches – SPIEGEL Interview with Daniel Privitera

Philip Fox, 6 April 2023

The Center for AI Risks & Impacts (KIRA) launches today. Our goal is to contribute to the safe and fair development and use of AI. KIRA is non-profit, independent and nonpartisan.

AI research is advancing at an accelerating pace. Along with many opportunities, this also poses serious risks. At present, neither our society nor humanity as a whole has sufficient protection against these risks. Without sufficient safety measures in place, AI systems can cause serious damage.

This is why we founded KIRA. We collaborate with academia, industry and the public sector to make progress towards our vision: a future in which advanced AI is beneficial and safe for humans. We conduct risk analyses, examine safeguards, and foster collaboration among all stakeholders.

Accompanying KIRA’s launch, German newspaper SPIEGEL Online published an interview with our CEO Daniel Privitera today. Privitera stressed that "we need international standards that guarantee safe and fair AI, now and in the future. Germany and the EU can and must help with this." He added that nobody currently knows how to ensure that AI is aligned with our values. Solving this alignment problem, he said, is particularly important now. Currently, "humanity is not prepared for what lies ahead of us."

KIRA is a non-profit UG (limited liability) under incorporation, based in Berlin. If you would like to get in touch, you can sign up for the KIRA newsletter or send an email to info@kira-zentrum.de.
